Thailand Visiting Scholar 2008-9

With the support of the Royal Thai Government, UNC is seeking a visiting scholar from Thailand to visit the campus for 6-8 weeks, preferably in the period August-November 2008. This scholar will:

  • make a significant contribution to one or more classes on Thailand or Southeast Asia
  • provide a public lecture on a mutually agreed topic
  • provide a research seminar
  • collaborate in research as appropriate
  • participate in a Workshop and other academic events

Selection criteria:

  • An earned Ph.D. in a relevant academic field
  • Evidence of an active research program or project
  • Research areas might include: migrant labor (within Thailand, Thais overseas); contemporary Thai politics; Thailand’s international relations; the Thai economy and trade; environmental issues in Thailand and Southeast Asia; and contemporary cultural issues in Thailand.
  • English-language capacity sufficient to allow undergraduate teaching

Interested applicants should submit:

  • A letter of application that includes the names of 2 academic referees (with email and telephone contacts for the applicant and referees)
  • a 1-page outline of current research
  • one recent publication
  • a detailed curriculum vitae
  • a statement of availability (proposed dates, length of proposed residence)

All submitted materials should be in English.

The Carolina Asia Center will provide the successful candidate with access to UNC facilities (including the libraries and shared office space), a return economy class airfare from Thailand to Raleigh-Durham airport, visa cost reimbursement, and a stipend to cover living expenses (including accommodation) while in Chapel Hill.

Carolina Asia Center Funds for the Support of East, South and South-East Asian Studies

New call for proposals with Thailand/South-East Asian emphasis. Deadline for new proposals is April 18, 2008. See application information for complete details.

To enhance East, South and South-East Asian studies at Carolina, funding is available to support research, faculty travel, and academic enrichment. Applicants for each program should be College of Arts & Sciences faculty members, except for applications for enrichment funds which may be from accredited Asia-related student organizations.

Accredited Student Organizations applying for academic enrichment funds should use the CAC Student Organization Funding Form
